I would like to thank all of you who have donated so generously for the cyclone relief. We have raised several thousand dollars. About half of that has been distributed as relief supplies directly through Suchinta. The other half has been sent to the Awami League's relief fund.
The relief efforts are by no means over. However, despite the military regime's statements urging all to help, they have hampered the relief operations of everyone else. They have instituted stringent requirements that anyone wishing to mount any aid operations must apply for permission and then be monitored by government officials. This has simply added a significant layer of bureaucracy to the efforts and slowed things down. In the end our poor people have suffered.
There have been many news reports outlining the lack of coordination in the regime's relief operations. More significantly, there have been a few reports of corruption and nepotism in the distribution of relief. I don't have to tell you how ironic this is considering the regime claims to be fighting corruption.
Considering that some of the most corrupt politicians of the past few years are still free and being actively supported by this regime, this is hardly surprising.

People will always prefer a democracy, no matter how corrupt it is, over a military regime.
My request to all NRB people … please do lobbing with international community, Government, press and human rights organizations to Free Sheikh Hasina. This regime have a blue print to make our leaders convicted and thrown them out of the general election 2008 (if !). This regime is the continuations of its previous BNP-Jamaat regime. Each and everyone of this regime is the beneficiary of the previous regime. So, they are trying establishing minus-two-formula as prescribed by World Bank. We hate the black law… the State of Emergency and hate those who impose it on us. Khaleda with her sons looted billions of dollars form Bangladesh. But unfortunately ACC scale Khaleda and Sheikh Hasina as same. They have booked all top lawyers to bypass fair judgment. Supreme Court gives a stay order and alters each and every order of High Court. Either the High Court knows nothing about judgment or the Supreme Court is dictated. Don’t forget, History repeated itself.
These are bad times for dictators like Moeen.
Thai Army lost. Musharaff is hanging by a thread and the Burmese junta is in a tight corner.

I'm sure there are people who feel that the current regime is better than the previous democracies in some ways.
But if you look at history, democracies always prevailed over dictatorship. Be it Thailand, where Thakshin was known to be corrupt, or Pakistan, where the late Benazir Bhutto herself was accused of corruption.
If you speak with many of the average citizens in Bangladesh today - small business owner, rickshaw puller, street vendors - they are tired of living under the constant fear of being harassed. At least in a democracy, they are free to express themselves.
Even the World Bank/ADB/IMF suggests that the economy is underperforming partly because of widespread fear among businessmen.
I wouldn't ask you to shut up, but I would certainly ask you to hold your patience for one or two more years. If the elections are not held by then, or a puppet government is installed and Hasina/Khaleda are given life sentences, you will see whether people prefer corrupt democracies over dictatorships.
Sheikh Hasina became ill in the court. Some govt. lawyer were arguing with her about the size of the courtroom. This is a really bad sign for our country. I urge all Bangladeshis to protest this insulting behavior of the govt. prosecutors.
We, the general people want democracy by ourselves, not to talk US/Indian officials by any one. Indian and US officials will not bring democracy in Bangladesh.
We have right to criticize CTG policy, but at the same time we like to thank those who bring the current CTG.
We want early fair election under a neutral EC and CTG. Thats ok, it does not mean to talk US/Indian officials.

I just caught up reading your blog and I was surprised to read one comment by a person named Morshed and can't figure out why you'd publish his comments....specially when I know that you do not post all comments (and probably won't post this one either). He keeps calling you "mama" and I hope you did not get bought by that. He wrote:

Recently, Dhaka City Awami League and other associate organizations of Awami League has declared to start "legitimate programme" to free Sheikh Hasina. I can quote from The New Nation (17th Dec), "Pointing to the party leaders, Dhaka City AL Ex-General Secretary and present acting president MA Aziz said, We're waiting for your call. If you call us we'll take to the streets to have the leader (Sheikh Hasina) released ". Then Why the central leaders are not responding to this call?

Discrimination between political parties in Bangladesh.
We are now going through many talks regarding reforms in political parties. The question is why the people of Bangladesh want the reforms in parties? The most probable answer is, the parties don't have the democratic nature of working together in a cooperative way that should be the most important & mandatory element in the Democratic process. In this regard, parties in Bangladesh have to own the mentality to work together avoiding the violent method in keeping the power & to corner the opposition without any logical reasons. All the developed countries in the world are in the good positions, because they don't have the political unrest & all factions' people work together when the issues are important for the nation as well as for the country. People know well that this is the crises period for the nation as Govt. failed to control the living expenses of the general people. On the other hand, the old & strong political parties are being pressurized to quit from the politics as they are also failed to bring much for the nation, although "half a loaf is better than no bread". To get rid of this hell, now is the proper time to unite the nation together without any divisions, any sectors as we saw earlier during the period of agitation against another army ruler H. M. Ershad. Now the proper time to take the oath again to save the country from the future giant. So no Awami League, no BNP, all should unite together on the issues that bother the nation & to make the country free from the enemies.
