Case Against My Aunt and The Economist Article

This week the military regime finally issued an order demanding that my aunt surrender herself to the courts. Once again, I find this astounding. The facts behind all of this make a mockery of due process.

In the original charge sheet filed in this case my aunt's name was not mentioned anywhere. Of course, the fact remains that the charge sheet itself was filed by the businessman in question while he was in DGFI (Bangladeshi military intelligence) custody. Why didn't he file these charges in the last five years? After all, my mother has not been in power since 2001. My aunt certainly has never been involved in politics.

My aunt lives in a small, two bedroom apartment in London. She has lived there for 10 years. She was not even in Bangladesh at the time this alleged extortion incident occured. The police were sent to sieze her property in Dhaka, but found none. She doesn't have any as she has not lived there in all this time.

My entire family's accounts have been frozen. This regime has not shown one single unusual transaction in any of them. This regime has also investigated all our accounts and property outside of Bangladesh. If indeed my mother or aunt were involved in corruption, where did the money go? Did it just vanish? This is like saying that because I did not see you steal, that does not prove you did not. It's impossible to prove a negative. The fact is, there is no money to find because there was no corruption.

My aunt does not even own a car in London. She takes the bus, even in the snow in the winter. She has diabetes but lives on her own. She has no staff or even a maid to help her out. To treat her this way is an abomination.

In a further testament to the complete lack of due process, there has still been no trial against my mother or aunt. It is illegal to attempt to sieze someone's property without so much as a trial. People are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. But this regime clearly does not care about that.

On the other hand, some of the most corrupt ministers from the previous regime as well our our own party still remain free. I won't name names, but most of you know who they are. This fact alone proves this regime's intentions.

This is clearly an attempt to destroy the reputation of Bangabandhu's family. That is what is happening here. In case you don't believe me, read this article from The Economist. Pay attention to the last paragraph:

http://www.economist.com/world/asia/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10113855

This is what is happening in Bangladesh today. DGFI is extorting businessmen to increase it's control over the media. This is shocking.

This is the media age and whoever controls the media controls public perception. It is no secret that the media in Bangladesh is currently censored. Now it appears this regime is attempting to go further, to take over the media directly. This way they can attempt to shape public opinion by whatever lies they propagate.

This is where our country is headed. We are a police state now, with no constitutional rights and no due process. We are about to become one where our military intelligence controls the media and decides who is going to be in politics and who is not. We have seen this twice before in our history. It does not bode well for our future.

My father knew your Aunt's husband's family. I remember my father was very happy when Rehana was married. I think her husband had a Ph.D. in economics or was working toward it. Later he worked in Brunei. So far as I can remeber, he was gravely ill for a while about ten or fifteen years ago. How is he doing now?

I assume he (your uncle, Rehans's husband) is living in London with your aunt. I thought your uncle's family (father?) had a house in Gulshan, at least that is what I thought around 1978/79 (?).

Please do not consider this as invasion of privacy of your family. We want to know because we feel Sheikh Shahib's family is our own family.

There was also a court case few years ago which related to your aunt's property in Dhanmondi. I think BNP government improperly seized the property. What happened to that case?

so, how much is Harvard tuition?

Sajeeb Wazed said...

$46,000 in tuition plus living expenses. Which is why I have had to take on a total of $72,000 in student loans.

Usually I don't bother with these comments, but I wanted to demonstrate how desperate these cowards are for propaganda. As is typical, this commenter does not have the guts to identify himself, but wants to imply that the only way I can afford to go to Harvard is by stealing. Unlike you, my wife and I are both well educated and very capable of making good money.

Sajeeb,
It is possible that anonymous did not imply that you used any ill-gotten wealth to pay your tuition.

Is there not something we can do to initiatie legitimate investigation into corruption by those making the rules?

Why is DINKAL writing about one adviser and her husband threatening a NRB property owner to occupy their building, but no one investigating OR DENYING?

Why is it that one adviser is illegally taking over a newspaper and threatening his brother and sister and law by interfering with legal process against them?

Why is it that one army head is illegally borrowing money (which he will never pay back) for his bank? And inserting his family member?

And if we look through the tax record of the CTG head when he lived in USA, are we 100% convinced he always told the truth? Can we see his wealth statement?

Anonymous said...

If CTG govt has any guts, please go to UK govt and ask for them to deport Rehana to Bangladesh. You will see that it won't happen. Not only that, they will get a moha thappor as British govt will laugh in their face.

Geetiara's husband has been sued.

Why can't he be arrested like everybody else under emergency rules?

Apparently all you need is an accusation to be detained without any due process.

Where is Fakruddin now?

-------------------------------
Dhaka, Nov 14 (bdnews24.com)--A woman Wednesday sued businessman Nazim Kamran Choudhury, husband of industry adviser Geeteara Safiya Choudhury, and eight others on charges of land grab and physical harassment. Updates with quotes from Geeteara's brother

Farhana Islam, wife of Dr Mahbubul Islam, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court for Dhaka.

Among the accused, Abu Rushd Tarek, younger brother of the caretaker adviser, said the case was designed to defame them.

Farhana attached with the case documents a medical certificate as a "proof of physical harassment".

The others named in the case are Shamsun Nahar Tarek, Mukim Choudhury, Shakhawat Hossain Shahadat, Adit Bhagat, Ripon, Bipul and Yaar Ali.

According to case details, Nazim Kamran had illegally stayed in Farhana's building in Gulshan-2, which houses his businesses, even after the house rental agreement had expired.

Farhana also alleged that Nazim Kamran and his men beat her with iron rods and tugged at her sari when they made a bid to "usurp the property" on Oct 22.

Tarek told bdnews24.com Wednesday: "We served a legal notice on them (Farhana and her husband) on Oct 31 and the case might come as a backlash."

Tarek claimed that Farhana and her husband made "false and baseless" statements against them from a press conference on Oct 25.

"They told reporters that we had harassed and manhandled Dr Islam and his wife. Our legal notice was served after those false allegations," he added.

Tarek threatened to file a defamation suit against the couple.

The anonymous asked the question about Harvard's tuition in a sarcastic way, which implies that Sajeeb is attending Harvard using stashed money. Anyone who lives and studies in U.S. knows that there are plenty other legal and honest ways to pay for college tuition: finaid, student loans, etc.

Mr. Wazed,

No one in London has maids or "staff" and most people don't have cars.

If she is innocent, I doubt there is anything to worry about. We, the people, deserve the truth and have a unique window to see what really went on during Al/BNP.

Do you honestly believe your family won't receive a fair trial?

Sajeeb Wazed said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the law that people are innocent until proven guilty? Our High Court has repeatedly ruled that my mother's detention is illegal. I have no problem with trials because my family has nothing to fear.

But that's the point; there are no trials and yet there is an arrest order for my aunt? My mother remains behind bars? This is illegal and immoral. So to answer your question, we are already not receiving a fair trial.

By speaking of a fair trial while ignoring the fact that these proceedings are already unfair you are being disengeneous.

I read the economist article. i was for more interested in the first paragraph, rather than the last one. "mafia" . . . "kleptocratic elite" "personality cult" ! nice legacy

“THE problem is that the mafia in Bangladesh were the political parties,” correctly observes a political analyst stuck in one of Dhaka's notorious traffic jams. At the roadside, the billboards—once a thriving business run by Tarique Rahman, the elder son of Khaleda Zia, prime minister until October last year—are empty. The luxury cars that used to ply the streets carrying bodyguards protecting members of the former kleptocratic elite are nowhere to be seen. Ten months into Bangladesh's state of emergency, the army-backed government is making headway in its drive to crush the two patronage-based personality cults that used to constitute Bangladeshi politics.

Sajeeb, I respect you for being a voice of reason. I've an apolitical statement/request - as you may be well aware, SIDR has destroyed the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Since you've quite a following in this blog, perhaps you could urge all your readers to help those affected by the cyclone. They can support the activities of organizations like Drishtipat, SpondonB, etc. and spread the word.

So what's next? Arrest warrant for Sajeeb & his bride? hehehe...

ooh wait, they can not do that. Sajeeb's bride is a US Citizen, right? hmm.. That would mean, the US Govt will shove their feet so high up in the General's a$$ that his next 20 generation will feel the pain (apologies for my french. The dictators boils my blood.)

I hope the current dillema in Pakistan teaches our General some lesson. No one can remain in power forever.

Today there is no due process in BD. The CTG & the General are able to fool the people in Bangladesh through their dog & pony show but not me. I do not see any reason for them to arrest Hasina. She is a VVIP (Besides, it sends a very negative message to the world about our own country). It is impossible for her to run away. Anyone with a bit of sense would know that. So why arrest/detain her unless you charge her with an actual crime and take her to trial? And yes, make it a public trial. Let the world watch it.

By the way, the person asking anonymously about Harvard tuition... Well I take it that you have internet access or else you would not be here. So could you please kindly visit harvard.edu and check for yourself.

Funny how another anonymous commentor mentions the kleptocracy, etc. of the two patronage system mentioned in the Economist article. Yet the article only provides evidence of corruption on the part of the Zia family. No evidence yet both families are the same? Perhaps the evidence of corruption against the Zia family proves this commentor is corrupt as well?

The false and fabricated charge recently filed angainst Sheikh Rehana is the latest example of this military-led regime's conspiry to destroy the reputation of Bangabandhu family. Behind the facade of a neutral and non-partisan Care Taker Government, the council of eleven puppets is trampling our civil and human rights every single day. They have turned the entire country into a Gulag land where any voice of dissent is silenced immediately with brute force and terror. Asif Chowdhury is probably being naive or mis-informed to think that Sheikh Rehana will get justice. She will not get justice in those kangaroo courts. Nor will her sister Sheikh Hasina. The entire state adminsitration under the absolute control of military is out to destroy the Bangabandhu family. What they are doing is civil rights violation. It is human rights violation. It is wrong and inhuman. In 1975, they tried to anihilate the entire Bangabandhu family with bullets and bayonets. This time around, they are using false and fabricated cases, smear campaign and kangaroo courts to destroy Banabandhu family.

The military has taken over the state once again. Just like in the past, they are going to suck the economic life blood out of this already anemic nation. Every country has an army -- in Bangladsh, the army has a country.

@ Priyaranjan,
You are an “okay” writer I thought – okay enough to be able to use tools such as sarcasm and techniques like hiding the “meaning” “in between the lines” and things like that. That is why when you resisted “anonymous’s” instigative ostensive use of a question, you sounded funny, very very funny. With the same stroke, you also somewhat made it clear that all that talk about Dhanmondi and Gulshan flats/houses were actually meant to question Sajeeb’s statements and NOT in the line of your “what is yours is mine” and “we are a family” type mushy stuff!!!

@ People talking about Geetiara Safia…
I believe there wont be much hue and cry over it. Too many higher-ups are going to be implicated for obvious reasons. Instead, my prediction would be that they will dilly-dally over it like they will and have been over the major cases… this will practically serve their purposes. You see, they do not have to win a case – they only have to postpone them till they get their shit together! Simple!

@ people those who believe USA and UK will “shove their feet up the a**” or give a “thappor” if the CTG seeks their assistance in detaining Sheikh Rehana and Sajeeb…
Well – these remarks somehow exonerate the roles these two countries have/are played/ing in the continuing saga on our national theater. Make no mistakes sirs – they are and will remain the primary dictators, and that too not just in our country but in many many other countries around the globe.

@ Banglalee,
Well said sir “Every country has an army, but in Bangladesh the Army has a country.” Excellent!

Sajeeb mama,

I am writing to you after a very long time. I went to Bangladesh to observe the situation there and i must say it is in a dire strait . a kg of rice now costs 50$. while travel to my village i saw Muzahid's car being accompanied by reinforcements which were also guarding a car carrying one of the ADVISORS and what not --they also entered the same VIP room inside the ferry.

If you have heard by now Islamic extremists belonging to Jamaate-islaami Pakistan, MLA Pakistan and Musharraf's kinsmen assassinated Benazir Bhutto yesterday. Sajeeb mama ---these same NAJAYAZ RAJAKAR JAMAAATI progenies under the directives of Tareque Zia,Rezzaqul Haider Chowdhury and Muzahid carried out the Auf 21 carnage.

We are sympathetic to SIDR victims . However you should imeediately talk to Indian/US Officials and put a PERMA BAN on FAKU's GOVT . Otherwise we might have a Benzir scenario in Bangaldesh too.

There is simply no time to waste. I have seen the situation in Bangladesh. Almost eveyone in Bangaldesh is aware of FAKU and JAMAAT's plans. While in the ferry i met a bus driver who almost attacked KUKUR MUZAHID . The whole bangladesh is united against these islamic extremists who are funded by some western countries to distort Islam . People are being intimidated by the army and despite unhappiness they are remaining quiet. BUT The question is for how long would these people be bogged down . Everyone in Bangladesh except some Rajakars and their ZAROZ OFFSPRINGS are frustrated and enraged by FAKU and MOEEN's actions.

Donating to SIDR victims would actually be like gifting FAKU and his family members with money . There is no time to show sympathy /remain calm. In order to avoid the Benzair scenario and the rise of Islamic extremists you must talk to US/INDIAN officials and eveoke them to PERMA BAN faku and moeen's clans

Sajeeb let me start with my repects towards you. You are well educated, and doesnt matter who you are, to me the whole educational matters quite a bit. I mean here we have one end you, and ther other hand I have Khaleeda's son, my choice would be obvious for whom I would vote for.

I was very happy when you went to Bangladesh. I never lived in Bangladesh, so whatever you said for the forthcoming future of Bangladesh, I was excited about everything. I mean at last we would have some sort of a leader who will free us from the regular BS politics happening in Bangladesh. Why ever did you leave the country? I saw so much potential.

Sajeeb my sympathies for you as a son of a mother is plenty but I do agree to most of the negative things most people say about both AL and BNP in general though. But then as you know, being in a political family is always attached with propaganda. That shouldnt bother you at this stage of your life.

I am pretty sure the anonymous person who asked the Harvard tuition had a bad intention of asking; signs of sarcasm. But what if the query was really valid? I never lived in Bangladesh but I personally went to school with sons and daughters of many politicians both AL and BNP in North America. The expenditure was way off the limits where sometimes I did ask myself the same question "where are they getting all this money from?". You are of a different generation but before the current government took over, did you know how the life of a politician's child studying abroad in North America was? How closely have you seen them? So from where I see it, I am sorry but the question that was left by that anonymous person was valid to a point though it contradicted with what you are.

Please also note that some people dont do enough research before they put a comment up. I live in North America so I very well know who is making what amount of money to go to a school like Harvard. You are well educated, so is your spouse. So, as far as I look at your situation it doesnt take enough to convince me that with a little loan you should be able to manage the tuitions.

I do feel sorry for you for your fate bringing you on the other side of the fence. But from the side of the fence we general population stand, the tautology is, "Most politicians are corrupted in Bangladesh" and the only negation of this would be until proven. Kind of makes it "guilty until proven innocent". Tough statement? yes. But required? Yes once again. This is something you wont deny yourself either. There was a filtering required.

As far as the current government goes. I half way with them in both ends. One side, they are doing a good job, I mean afterall they did take the initiative of clearing things out and bringing a lot of things under question and investigation. On the other hand where are all the trials? every humanbeing deserves a trial. Thats human right! I am fully on with you with that one.

Anyways enough said. I hope and wish you good luck on every future endeavor of yours. Educational, Political or otherwise.

-Shaon Muhammad
